Otxangoa, the local and eco-responsible design product

The Otxangoa brand was created in 2019 by Nelly Fontaine, and moved in the summer of 2021 to its premises in the Créaluz business incubator in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the ‘ideal’ location for this eco-innovative business, specialising in the design of lifestyle products.

It was in 2018 that the idea for Otxangoa took root in the mind of Nelly Fontaine, the founder of a design agency for sportswear and outdoor products. After several years designing products for other brands, this nature enthusiast came to two decisions: that she wanted to bring to life all her ideas that had been ‘left on the shelf’ over time, and that it was urgent to start producing in a new way.

“Otxangoa is a way of expressing at one and the same time my expertise and my wish to change things in the field of textiles.” That means producing in a more responsible way. The urgency stems from the need to reduce textile waste, which amounts to 650 tonnes per year. Nelly’s mantra is, “There is already a huge reservoir of unused material; what’s the point of continuing to produce it? The textile sector must reinvent itself.”

The eco-designed espadrille: when innovation meets tradition

The first Otxangoa product came into being from a concept combining tradition and eco-design: to give jeans a second life by making them into espadrilles! To acquire the material needed, the company collected jeans from individuals or fund-raising organisations. After washing and ironing the fabric, the aim was to optimise the cutting as much as possible, so that each part of the jeans could be used, with the minimum of fabric wasted. The product was then assembled by hand in a partner workshop in Mauléon, the home of the espadrille.

Production is both eco-responsible and 100% local. And to respect the codes of responsible consumption right to the end, manufacture is done to order, by pre-ordering.

Otxangoa also offers a range of personalised espadrilles by local artists Alba, Alaiart and Modjo.

But the brand does not intend to stop at just one product. “There are other innovative and eco-responsible products on the way.”

Créaluz: a playground for young eco-innovative start-ups

Located at Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Créaluz is a space devoted to supporting eco-design projects, hosting 7 companies, all committed to breaking consumer codes.

This is an ideal environment for Nelly Fontaine’s business, allowing her total freedom to bring her ideas to life. “Having my offices here gives me the space to create, test products, make prototypes, etc.”

With infrastructure available and personalised support for the development of the business, she says, “I have the benefit of very good monitoring and excellent advice from the teams of the Communauté Pays Basque and the Technology Park, who challenge and support me every day on the enterprise side.”

This set-up is complemented by the presence of six other young companies that share the same values. “It’s a dream opportunity to interact, and share our good practice and our experiences. It’s important not to be isolated when you are just beginning an entrepreneurial undertaking.”

As for Otxangoa, the O is from olatu, the wave, combined with txangoa, which evokes a path, an excursion. This young brand is no doubt on the right track to surf the wave of success.
