An ally in conserving drinking water

From the Technocité science and technology park in Bayonne, Hervé Larroquette and his partner in the company HPH are planning a piece of street furniture for the beach that can help save drinking water resources.

By 2050, in other words tomorrow, demand for drinking water will increase. This is an alarming observation when we know that water suitable for drinking represents only 2% of all the water available on the Earth. It’s what inspired Hervé Larroquette, co-founder of the company HPH, in 2020, to design, along with his partner Pierre Latapie, a piece of equipment that from summer 2023 could revolutionise the use of drinking water on beaches, as well as the well-being of its users. This idea became even more pressing after the situation experienced this summer when the drought led to water restrictions.

Drinking water: sharing to consume better

If there is a value common to many people, yet of benefit to all, “it’s sharing”. Hervé Larroquette is “convinced” of this, and it’s the reason he has placed it at the heart of his project. “Sharing a resource to economise on it, sharing well-being and comfort, sharing technical skills, sharing information… Sharing is in the DNA of our project.”

The objective of this project is to produce street furniture for the beach, whether on the coast or at the lakeside. It would allow municipalities or private establishments to offer a service to clean and dry people’s feet as they leave the beach. It would be ergonomic and hygienic and save 80% of the water used in traditional solutions.

This equipment would also have the advantage of “channelling the by-products from the use of the facilities currently offered and therefore cancelling out that over-consumption.”

To pursue this approach to its logical conclusion, the equipment will be entirely designed according to European Ecolabel standards and will enable educational information to be provided in order to raise awareness of users to good practice when it comes to using drinking water.

The prototype of the first version is currently being finalised, and a new version, even more self-sufficient in terms of the resource, is already under consideration.

Technocité: collaboration at the heart of the business dynamic

Hervé Larroquette has been working on his project at the Technocité technology park in Bayonne since September 2021. “Moving to this technology site has given me a real open mind on how to design my project overall, which is very valuable when you start with a blank page and everything has to be created,” he says, referring to all the training and experts available to the young companies incubated by the Communauté Pays Basque. This personalised support has enabled him to grow his initial project significantly.

“When you are an entrepreneur, there is a risk of becoming isolated and losing your perspective. Here you are able to meet with other entrepreneurs to discuss and ‘heckle’ each other about our projects so we can gather advice and comments from everybody,” he explains, talking about the boot-camp organised this year for the first time and bringing together all the businesses being incubated.

The team has been working non-stop since last April at the INPI warehouse so that the project can be operational on beaches in the summer of 2023.
