DPO training at Izarbel

The Basque Country Digital Cluster organised two training sessions on the role of the Data Protection Officer (DPO) at the Izarbel Technology Park in Bidart. Members of the cluster may now call on a DPO to assist them in their compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation.

The General Data Protection Regulation, which came into effect on 25 May 2018, is a legal framework governing the use and transmission of personal data. The GDPR requires the bringing into compliance of companies using this type of data. The companies, public bodies and non-profit organisations of the 28 Member States which collect personal data on European residents are concerned by the GDPR, as are similar entities located outside the EU but which also handle personal data on European residents.

The French National Commission for IT and Liberties (CNIL) specifies that the appointment of a DPO is a requirement for ‘public authorities and bodies, organisations whose essential activities entail regular and systematic monitoring of persons on a large scale and organisations whose essential activities involve the large-scale processing of sensitive data or data related to criminal convictions and offences’.

For companies that do not fall within these criteria, the appointment of a DPO is optional. For the others, the task of a DPO may be pooled and outsourced under certain conditions. ‘As the GDPR applies to any public or private organisation which handles personal data on its behalf or not, or to sub-contractors, companies are advised to appoint a DPO,’ Marie Jo Burucoa, President of the Basque Country Digital Cluster, explains.

The Basque Country Digital Cluster organised two training sessions on the role of the DPO last October and December. Ten companies took part in this five-day training course, funded entirely by the FAFIEC (Engineering and Consultancy Training Fund), including Izarbel-based companies SIG Image SEI, Goodness, IS Decisions, Novaldi, Aditu and Snapp’. ‘The advantage for companies in the digital sector is clear: funded training, no travel expenses as training takes place in the Basque Country and the resulting certification,’ Marie Jo Burucoa concludes.
