36 teams and 350 participants took part in the cross-border edition of the 24 Hours of Innovation in Irun to take on a technological and creative design challenge on the theme of “advanced manufacturing” in exactly 24h”.

The 13th edition of the 24h of Innovation organised by ESTIA took place at Ficoba in Irun on 15 and 16 March. Teams made up of students and professionals were invited to take up a technological challenge in exactly 24 hours. The event’s main theme was “Advanced Manufacturing” which is strategically important for the three cross-border territories in France, Spain and Andorra which are taking part in the European programme* that is the partner of the 24h of Innovation.

36 topicswere submitted by companies and organisations from both sides of the border, including some based at the Basque Country Technology Park, such as Cluster Osasuna, Lynxter, Vracoop, SIG Image and Addimadour. 350 participants assigned to 36 teams worked hard for a whole day on designing creative technological solutions for the topics provided. Over 20 universities, schools, vocational training centers and high schools within the cross-border region were represented in the teams.

At the end of 24h, a jury composed of representatives from the European Patent Office, the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) based in Donostia, the Tecnalia Foundation, Estia Entreprendre, Compositadour and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers (ENSAM) awarded the prizes:

  • The first prize was awarded to the Gas Guys team who devised an ingenious concept for making a compact, transportable, lightweight container which is easy to store and able to hold 300 hundred litres of gas  (O2, N2, Ar, He, etc.).
  • The second prize was awarded to the Floot team who answered the following question: “How can Matière Bavarde be used to help keep elderly people and persons with reduced mobility in their own homes?” The team developed applications which make it possible for all types of surfaces to be transformed into sensors or switches.
  • The third prize was awarded to the Mihia team who found a development idea for a diagnostic tool and its associated application used for capturing tongue movements and made from 3D printed biopolymer.
